She also spent a summer semester in England studying Public International Law. Kali completed her articles at a boutique immigration and employment law firm in Toronto and was called to the bar of Ontario in 2019 before returning home to British Columbia to be closer to her family. She joined Stevenson, Luchies & Legh in 2019 where she practices primarily in the area of immigration law at the Vancouver office. She is a member of the Law Society of British Columbia, the Canadian Bar Association, and a non-practising member of the Law Society of Ontario. Prior to law school, Kali received her BA from the University of Victoria where she studied Political Science and Religious Studies and was regularly involved with student volunteer initiatives as well as attending Model United Nations conferences. Although she had been interested in law since she was young, it was her studies at the intersection of politics and religion that sparked her interest in immigration law specifically. In her spare time, Kali enjoys baking, creative writing, and spending time with her family, friends, and beloved cat, Cheddar. Learn More

It's Not Too Late! Let Us Help

There are consequences to an expired visa.

Work visas, study visas and temporary resident visas all come with an expiration date. If you are residing in Canada under a visa and intend to stay longer than the term of your visa, then it is important to note the expiration date so you can apply for a renewal before your visa expires.

Unfortunately, you may have been mistaken about the expiration date on your visa, forgotten to apply for a renewal or been unaware of the consequences of failing to apply for a renewal. If you failed to renew your visa prior to the expiration date, it is not too late to do so.

If your work visa has expired, you still have 90 days to apply for a renewal. You may continue to reside in Canada during the 90-day period, but you cannot work until you receive your renewed work visa. After 90 days, or if your application for renewal is denied, you must leave Canada. If you do not leave voluntarily, you may be deported, in which case you will need permission to return to the country.

If you have applied for renewal of a temporary resident visa, you cannot be asked to leave Canada or deported while your application is pending. If your application is denied, you may be deported.

If you are facing deportation or your application for renewal has been denied, contact one of the immigration lawyers in your area to find out how they can help keep you in the country.

Factors in favour of visa renewal.

Certain factors make a strong application for visa renewal. These include:

  • Work experience in Canada in conjunction with a positive Labour Market Opinion.
  • Study experience in Canada in conjunction with a proven need to continue those studies (for example, it will take you another year to complete your two-year program).

Our experienced immigration lawyers can help you to identify the particular factors that will make your application for visa renewal as strong as possible.

You need an immigration lawyer, not a consultant. Here’s why.

You may have heard that an immigration consultant can help you file your application for a reduced fee. Immigration consultants often charge less for their services than experienced immigration lawyers because they have less to offer. Hiring an immigration consultant can be perilous. In Canada, immigration consultants:

  • Do not have to undergo legal training.
  • Do not necessarily understand the complexities of Canadian immigration laws.
  • May or may not be certified by the organization that governs immigration consultants in Canada.
  • Have claimed to be immigration experts even if they have no experience with more complicated immigration files or applications.
  • Have defrauded prospective immigrants by charging exorbitant fees and simply telling the clients that their applications were refused when, in fact, the applications were never even filed.

Don’t risk your immigration goals by hiring someone who may not have the knowledge and experience to get the job done. Get the peace of mind you deserve! Our immigration lawyers will help you to prepare your best possible application, maximizing your chances of success.

How our experienced immigration lawyers can help.

Our skilled immigration lawyers can help get you back to work or school as soon as possible by reviewing your renewal application before you send it in. They will ensure that everything is in order so that your renewal process goes smoothly.

You have already invested significant time and money into obtaining a work, study or temporary visa and coming to Canada. A skilled immigration lawyer costs more money; but if you truly want to continue to stay in Canada past your visa expiration date, only an experienced immigration lawyer can ensure that you get the best result as quickly as possible.
